-
When Sally is being chased by Leatherface through the undergrowth,
she actually cuts herself on the branches quite badly. A lot of the blood on her clothes and body is real.
-
When Pam gets hung on the meat hook she was actually held
up by a nylon chord that came up between her legs.
-
During the "dinner" scene, Leatherface cuts Sally's finger. However,
since the crew couldn't get the fake blood to come out of the tube behind the blade, he really does cut
her finger.
-
This film wasn't released in Australia until the early 1980s.
-
Director Tobe Hooper claims to have gotten the idea for the
film standing in a crowded hardware section. While thinking of a way to get through the crowd, he spotted
the chainsaws.
-
When it was first released, people got so horrified, they
would actually walk out on sneak previews.
-
The chainsaw used in the film was a Poulan 306A. They
covered the Poulan logo with a piece of black tape to avoid any possible lawsuits.
-
There was a family still living in the house used in the film.
They rented the house to the film crew and continued to stay there the entire shoot.
-
To study up on Leatherface, Gunnar Hansen went to a school for
the mentally challenged. He wanted to see how they moved and talked.
-
Leatherface had "lines" in the script. They were mostly
gibberish with little side notes indicating what he was trying to say.
-
Leatherface's teeth were prosthesis made especially for Gunnar
Hansen by his dentist.
-
The effect used when Leatherface cut his leg is simple.
The actor wore a metal plate over his leg, a piece of meat and a blood bag were place on top of that, and then the chainsaw
did its thing.
-
Hooper used a stunt double when Sally jumps out the window.
However, Marilyn Burns ended up hurting her self shooting the insert for her landing.
-
Entertainment Weekly voted this the second scariest film ever
made.
-
There was originally a two week filming schedule. Ultimately
it took four weeks to film.
-
Despite the title, only one person in the film is killed with
a chainsaw.
Goofs
-
The blood the hitchhiker smears on the van is
gone in the long shot a few seconds later.
-
When the van pulls into the service station, the cook comes
out. On the door there is a red open sign, later it's gone.
Personal History
-
Watched this film at a friend's house one time.
During the chase through the woods (Between Leatherface and Sally) someone started up a chainsaw outside the window
I was sitting by. I nearly shat myself.
-
Watched this film with my brother and my dad.
Half way through the film, both of them left the room because they didn't like it (Blasphemy).
